Considered by many as the quintessential American city, Chicago is a mixture of enterprise and sophistication. The city, first incorporated in 1837, owes much of its success to its location in the vicinity of the Mississippi River, between the fertile farmland of the Midwest, and the central hub of railroads and canals. All combined to make Chicago a manufacturing center, a natural shipping center and center of commerce. It has been appropriately been called the Hub of the Nation.
The Great Chicago Fire of 1871 claimed more than 17,000 buildings and 250 lives, but the city was soon rebuilt. During its rebuilding it became home to the first skyscrapers. Most notable today are the Wrigley Building on Michigan Avenue at the Chicago River; the Mies van der Rohe-designed Federal Center plaza; the 36-story Gothic Tribune tower; the First National Bank Building, the world’s tallest bank; and the 110-story Sears Tower, the tallest building in the United States.
Chicago is famous as the home of the NFL Chicago Bears and the NBA Chicago Bulls. Recreational bicyclists can tour a 20-mile route along Lake Michigan and through Lincoln Park. The Art Institute of Chicago, the Field Museum and the Museum of Science and Industry are recognized worldwide.
Nearby cities include Evanston, Oak Brook, Des Plaines and Naperville.
